What’s it Made Of?

The Aquila Favonia replica came to me from a client who purchased the raw 3D print on Etsy. My work included assembly, top coating, sanding, and custom painting the piece, which came disassembled as thirteen individual pieces of FDM printed PLA.

To start, I gave each piece an initial round of hand sanding with 80-grit sandpaper. The sword was then assembled using a flat steel bar as an inner support, and Weld On 16 acrylic glue. To help further smooth the print lines, I applied a coat of XTC 3D, and further sanded the entire sword up to 400 grit. Additionally, I used two heavy coats of filler primer to fill any remaining lines, and sanded until I was satisfied with the print line coverage. A final base coat of gold enamel was applied before detailed airbrushing began.

The Aquila Favonia replica required careful layers of masking and airbrushing in order to match the exact color patterning in-game. The coloration includes many small details and sharp points, which can easily be lost with over spray or if attempting to add paint before base layers have dried. Beyond this, the blade of the sword is a pearlescent white — which does not lend itself to shading or contouring. Because of this I focused my efforts on the blue and gold portions of the blade, and brought depth and detail in to those areas with darker shading and subtle highlights.

Complete, the Aquila Favonia prop measures right around 3’ (0.9M) long, and weighs just under 3 pounds (1.36kg). I also finished a Wolf’s Gravestone print for the same client.
