The Symbol of a Sith Lord

Discovered on the planet Cathar, Jedi Knight Revan took up this helmet to honor the slain rebel Mandalorian it once belonged to. He vowed to wear it for the duration of his battle against the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders beyond the Outer Rim. But as Revan’s conquest continued, the dark side began to conquer him… After the Mandalorian wars, it was no longer a Jedi who bore the helmet, but sith lord Darth Revan—at the head of a Sith armada that nearly brought the Republic to its knees.

For this commission, Darth Revan finds his helmet once again. Though battered, it is still a symbol of the extraordinary power of a true Sith Lord.

Making Darth Revan’s Helmet

Darth Revan’s helmet is constructed using EVA foam, in thicknesses varying from 2mm to 10mm. Pieces are glued using barge cement, with foam clay details added in to smooth out some of the top foam shapes. The helmet was sealed using semi-rigid Creature Cast rubber, sprayed with a critter gun. Approximately ten coats of rubber were applied in total, which were then sanded down to a smooth, paintable finish.

The look was finished off with painted with acrylics and a custom cut dark tinted visor. My client was specifically looking for a battered, weathered look — so I made sure to add plenty of scratches and paint chips that resemble “space battle” damage.

The pattern I created to make Dark Revan’s helmet is available as a FREE download here! I also did a “May the Fourth” write up on how to use the pattern, which you can view here.
